Electrostatic Spray
Electrostatic spray technology is used to apply PTFE and other coatings to medical devices, aeronautic systems and automated electronics. Use of this technology allows for negatively charged liquid coatings to be attracted to a neutral target, ultimately solving the challenge posed when coatings must be applied to machines or equipment that emit a static charge.
Medical Industry Applications of Electrostatic Spray
One of the great applications of the electrostatic technology is on anticoagulant devices and for research purposes. Common medical devices that have had electrostatic spray of some kind applied include:
- Guidewires
- Mandrels
- Coils
- Cannulas
- Needles
- Forceps
Electrostatic Spray Technology vs Other Spray Technology
An electrostatic sprayer has a nozzle with a tiny electrode tip that applies an electrical charge to the spray. This electrical charge causes a natural force of attraction between the spray droplets and target surface.
Electrostatic spray nozzles use a very high-frequency vibration instead of high pressure or compressed air to produce extremely small and uniform droplets. The technology also gives the user better control for each individual spray with a targeted volume and allows for a long-term life and use of the spray versus a similar, simple spray technology.
The charge of electrostatic spray is significantly stronger than a regular spray – it defies gravity 75 times over and allows for droplets of the spray to reverse direction, move upward and against gravity while passing the target surface. This phenomenon is known as electrostatic “wraparound.”
